The Sounds of Quarantine

Hey readers! During these odd and eventful times, artists and musicians have been motivated to share their opinions and thoughts concerning the pandemic and its impact on life through art. In this post, I’ll list some of my favorite pandemic-inspired songs with a quick review if anyone is looking for some jams! If anyone else has favorite songs that were created during the pandemic that aren’t mentioned, share them in the comments!

  • “Level of Concern” by twenty one pilots- this groovy song was one of the first “quarantine” songs that got released; though it doesn’t explicitly mention the pandemic, only referencing “quarantine,” the song talks about a person stressed out, asking for reassurance and comfort from a friend during the pandemic; the song has an uplifting tone, and is definitely a great song if you’re feeling down and need a mood booster.

  • “Six Feet Apart” by Alec Benjamin- the focus of this pop song is the struggle of being separated from loved ones during the pandemic, mentioning how the person misses that the people they care about since they are “so far, but so close” and “too far away to hold but close enough to break [their] heart; it has a soothing melody that’s played out on acoustic guitar, and on the chorus being supported by piano as well; if you prefer more of a ballad or slower song to chill out too, then this song would be a good recommendation.

  • “Better Days” by OneRepublic- this pop song focuses on the future brightness that will eventually overtake the dark present; the song has a good back beat, and the chorus has a cool melodic feel; this song is perfect if you’re an alternative or pop fan, and if you want an optimistic outlook for the future

  • “Six Feet Apart” by Luke Combs- if you’re a country fan, then say no more: Luke Combs delivers a country pandemic song played on acoustic guitar about what everyone is missing out on (family, contact, social gatherings…) and the eventual resolution of the pandemic, and to stay positive and strong during these hard times; if you’re looking for some positivity or are a country enthusiast, check out this song.
  • “Stuck With U” by Ariana Grande & Justine Bieber- though I usually don’t listen or prefer songs from either of these artists, “Stuck With U” is pretty enjoyable; it has a nice groove and back-beat, especially for the slow feel it has; the song focuses on making the most of and enjoying the people that you’re quarantining with (whether that be a pet, friend, family member, or yourself); the message of the song is most appealing, and the relaxing groove is easy to get lost in.

There’s also been some pretty good remixes of past songs during the quarantine that should be mentioned:

  • “Mask, Gloves, Soap, Scrubs” by Todrick Hall (originally “Nails, Hair, Hips, Heels)- if you’re looking for a bop to listen to while cleaning, this remix definitely fits the bill; with an electronic-techno beat it’s easy to groove to while providing a witty satire on life at home during the pandemic.

  • “You Are the Champions” by Queen & Adam Lambert (in honor of frontline workers during the corona virus)- this uplifting rendition puts into perspective the pandemic and what others are sacrificing or risking to help others, and the positivity we can bring to others in a bleak situation.

Hopefully these provide a nice starting point for any quarantine playlists! Stay safe, stay home, and keep feeling good vibes!
